Synchrotron target design and development
Optical and optomechanical design, assembly and validation
The ESRF (European Synchrotron Radiation Facility) contracted ASE Optics Europe for the design, development and manufacture of three unique, custom-made targets to integrate into their synchrotron beamlines for their research.
ASE Optics Europe designed and manufactured three different lenses: 0.5X, 400mm and 150mm.
From concept design to manufacturing
ASE Optics Europe’s work began with an initial system feasibility study. From this study, our optical design experts designed and developed each of the targets required for the Synchrotron, including all critical phases for the success of the project:
- Analysis of optical tolerances.
- Opto-mechanical design
- Manufacture of custom lenses, barrels and other opto-mechanical components.
- System assembly and validation of the parameters required by the customer.
During the design phase, materials were carefully selected to meet all requirements. For the validation phase, ASE Optics Europe designed and assembled an in-house MTF bench, tailor-made for each lens, to ensure maximum accuracy in quality testing.
Results – customer satisfaction
The results were a success. The custom lenses delivered exceeded the expectations of the ESRF, who sent months later some images of the results obtained thanks to the custom lenses designed and manufactured by us. Recently, ASE Optics visited the ESRF facilities, and we could see how the three lenses are in use, operational and offering the same good results as the first day.
