ASE Optics Europe has designed and developed an optical relay for the ESRF
The European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) has once again relied on the expertise of ASE Optics for the development of a new optical lens for its facilities. On this occasion, the center required a projection lens to be installed on its Nano-Imaging beamline. The ESRF needed a lens with 0.8X magnification of the visible image generated by a synthesizer coupled to another 9.7X lens on a large CMOS sensor.
Scope of work and technical details
After an initial evaluation of the customer’s specifications, our team of optical engineers prepared a pre-design of the 0.8X system, using available models, to demonstrate that the expected quality was within specification. In addition, we presented a tolerance analysis based on finite element difference and Monte Carlo analysis to confirm that the system would meet the MTF requirements. These results have been confirmed and updated during the execution of the project, and confirmed in the delivery of the final system.
The scope of work for the manufacture and delivery of the 0.8X relay to specification included the following tasks:
- Review of specifications and requirements
- Optical design
- Opto-mechanical design
- Final design review: optics and mechanics
- Preparation of production documentation
- Materials procurement, reception and verification
- Optical relay assembly
- Testing and validation of the system at our facilities
- Delivery
Previous experience in design and development of synchrotron optics systems
This was the fourth project contracted by the ESRF for the design and development of unique custom optical systems for its synchrotron lines. Prior to this project, ASE Optics Europe had already designed and developed other optical systems for the ESRF:
- Optical relay 0.5X
- Lens 150 mm
- Lens 400 mm
